The Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association (MMHA), one of the largest minor hockey associations, has been part of the Mississauga Hockey League (MHL) coming into our 40th year. We are proud to support a fun environment where girls and boys can develop their skills as part of our very successful house league hockey program. Our association supports a strong and diverse house league program is the cornerstone of our association. The MHL house league rules prohibit the use of body checking at any age or skill level.
The MHL is our governing body and has overall responsibility for the league. Including Meadowvale, there are eight associations that comprise the Mississauga Hockey League (MHL). Over the past few years the MHL has completely removed body checking from all House League Hockey levels and has implemented additional discipline measures to further enhance respect in hockey.
Meadowvale provides a complete range of age specific levels that allow boys and girls to play with other kids at their age. Following an evaluation period, typically, the second and third weekends in September, players are placed on one of four levels, “Red” (select), “White”, “Blue” and “Green”. This approach helps ensure balanced, competitive and fair teams who will play against other similarly skilled players on other teams. The different levels allow us to support a wide range of skill levels, from the returning experienced players with years of experience to the new “I want to try hockey” first time player. The size and experience of the Meadowvale association is an advantage helping us build more complete teams with similar skill levels.
In general, there is a seven week convening period where members from all MHL associations are assigned to help ensure the evaluation process has properly placed the kids at the right skill level. During this seven week period there may be individual player or entire team movement to help make sure the season is fun and balanced.
There is typically one game and one practice a week. Depending on the age group games can start as early as 11:00am Saturday morning. Games are played at rinks within the City of Mississauga. Practices are arranged on a rotating schedule but typically result in one practice a week. Usually, but not always, the practices will be held at our home rink Meadowvale Four Rinks. Again the times of the practices will depend on the number of teams registered with the association and the age group. Typically older players will have later practice start times. Practice schedules will be posted when the ice allocation is completed typically just before the start of the season.
The Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association house league program is about skills development and fun. If the answer to the question, “What is it you and your son or daughter want to get out of hockey?” is skills development and fun you have come to the right place. The goal of the coaches and the Board of Directors is to make this enjoyable and memorable for everyone. So, if you are looking for a great place to play, whether it is your 10th season or 1st season, Meadowvale Minor Hockey is the place to play.
Remember, this is just a game played by kids for the fun of it. When people look back on their youth hockey career they won’t remember the colour of their medals year after year, they won’t remember the third game of their second season when they won or lost some game. They will remember the friends and the overall experience. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that experience is positive and support. This is not the National Hockey League. So let’s all relax, sit back, cheer for everyone including the other teams, support our officials and enjoy the great game of hockey. Be the example.
